Al Bustan Rotana

Located within easy striking distance of Dubai’s airport, the Al Bustan Rotana has positioned itself as a predominantly business or airport stopover hotel. Not that it’s all work and no play – far from it: the Al Bustan offers a decent amount of leisure facilities for when the ties are loosened, including a spacious swimming pool, a popular nightclub and a well-equipped, if poorly attended, gym. Standard bedrooms are reasonably sized, with huge beds, but wardrobe space is limited and the bathrooms are dated, diminutive and low on amenities. A handful of rooms come with their own private terrace that face on to the pool deck, raising their appeal considerably. The executive club levels are a distinct improvement with larger rooms, a dedicated check-in/out area, TV lounge, breakfast area and net access.

The essentials
• Most hotels within 200 metres of a major international airport are quite ugly and feature-poor, but the Bustan boasts as much entertainment as anything you would find alongside the beaches.

• Seven restaurants and bars should be enough to keep you exploring. Japanese Eatertainment specialists Benihana and Thai restaurant Blue Elephant are top options.

• Newly pedestrianised walkways mean that you can stroll from the Bustan to the Dubai Tennis Stadium. The hotel itself has tennis courts but the stadium is home to the annual Dubai Tennis Championships and large music events throughout the year.
