Al Murooj Rotana

Unfortunately, Al Murooj has been stuck in the middle of some rather comprehensive roadworks as Dubai Mall and Downtown have been built, but it’s starting to reappear on the area’s horizon again as somewhere worth staying. Literally opposite Dubai Mall, the hotel’s a great family base for exploring all that the city has to offer. Although you’re just off Sheikh Zayed Road, Jumeirah Beach is only 10 minutes away. To keep little ones amused, there’s plenty to do in Dubai Mall, including an Underwater Zoo (otherwise known as an aquarium), an ice skating rink and a huge entertainment centre called Magic Planet – full of arcade games and other bleeping wonders. Family friendly restaurants like Carluccios litter the outside area at the mall, all with perfect views of the musical Dubai Fountains. Back at the hotel, there are five restaurants, ranging from Italian to Lebanese and there are kids’ menus available.

The essentials
• The hotel’s pub Double Decker is a British expat institution – complete with red phone box. It shows all major sports events, including Premier League football and stays open until late.

• If you’re a Club Rotana member then you get free breakfast, cocktails and other drinks throughout the day in the Lounge.

• For Dubai’s best cheesecake, head to independent cafe The Lime Tree Café & Kitchen in Jumeirah 1, right by Jumeirah mosque. Seriously yummy food.

• Want to carry on the pub crawl? Investigate Long’s – in sister stay Towers Rotana Hotel, only a few minutes away. It’s said to have the longest bar in the Middle East.

• Use the hotel’s babysitting service and head out to Souk Al Bahar in Downtown for sleek restaurants and glam cocktail bars.
